Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wrote an essay over the weekend calling for a slowdown of AI development, drawing support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
However, President Trump downplayed the need for his administration to monitor AI development. He asked followers to vote on the best name for what he called an “ever growing ‘Revolution.’” As of Sunday, September 20, the poll had over 200,000 votes with “Superior Intelligence” leading. The naming push follows rare agreement among major AI executives that frontier systems are advancing faster than safety measures can follow. Reuters reported that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged developers to reduce capability gains while independent safeguards catch up. Amodei called for outside evaluators, industry coordination and international cooperation while allowing continued research instead of halting model training.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman backed that approach and said similar discussions were already happening inside his company. Trump answered by rejecting new restraints and arguing existing law gives the government enough power to address misconduct.
