Stephen A. Smith defended his decision to dine with President Donald Trump by citing a White House phone ban when Charlamagne Tha God demanded a public record of the meeting.
Smith stated on his “Straight Shooter” show that personal phones were banned at the White House entrance, forcing him to hand his phone over to his bodyguard before entering. In reply to Charlamagne Tha God’s call for a public record or documentation of the dinner, Smith asked whether critics would have preferred that he turned around and skipped the meeting entirely. Smith attended the October 15, 2026, White House dinner alongside President Trump, Bill Maher, and Kid Rock. Smith maintained that he did not go to apologize or yield to criticism, but to address three specific issues.
Smith told CNN he told Trump that firms feared giving to those schools because of his stance on diversity, equity and inclusion. He said Trump agreed to look into it, but had made no firm pledge. Smith also said he had pressed for proof of Trump’s upbeat view of the economy.
On October 21, the show played Smith’s answer. Charlamagne said he would have wanted a sit-down that the public could see. He would have sought an interview, not a private dinner chat. He said he wasn’t holding Smith to a higher standard than anyone else. But he noted that elected leaders had to speak to Trump.
