Former Vice President Kamala Harris criticized the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling gutting a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, speaking after receiving the William O. Douglas Award at Public Counsel’s Annual Event.

The Supreme Court earlier on Wednesday struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, making it harder for minorities to challenge electoral maps as racially discriminatory under the landmark civil rights law, in a victory for Louisiana Republicans and President Donald Trump’s administration. Speaking after receiving the award, Harris told the audience:

“They have had an agenda that has been in place for decades to get to this very moment and beyond, which is to make it so difficult for the people to vote that they won’t because they know the people are not stupid and see the corrupt, incompetent, callous administration that is in the White House right now.”
