The United States overtook Italy and China with the most confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Today, the U.S. jumped China in the total number of COVID-19 deaths.

From data compiled by Johns Hopkins, the U.S. death toll reached 3,440 by mid-afternoon Tuesday. China has seen 3,309 of its citizens succumb to the virus. Italy and Spain have 12,000+ and 8,200+ deaths respectively.

The epicenter of the pandemic in the United States is New York City where 932 of the state’s 1,500 deaths occurred. Washington state has confirmed 222 COVID-19-related deaths. To put the numbers in further unsettling terms for Americans, there are more reported cases of death due to coronavirus than U.S. citizens lost on 9/11.
