Many of the businesses deemed “essential” nationwide during the COVID-19 pandemic are liquor stores and others like grocery stores that sell alcoholic beverages.
But as alcohol remains readily available during these uncertain times, the World Health Organization is warning against consuming your favorite drink to decrease the risk of contracting the coronavirus. The European branch of the World Health Organization addressed their concern:
“At times of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, alcohol consumption can exacerbate health vulnerability, risk-taking behaviors, mental health issues, and violence, WHO/Europe reminds people that drinking alcohol does not protect them from COVID-19, and encourages governments to enforce measures which limit alcohol consumption.”
WHO is imploring people to avoid consuming alcohol altogether, but with social distancing forcing people into “Zoom Happy Hours” around the globe, the level of alcohol consumption will undoubtedly remain high. “Avoid alcohol altogether so that you do not undermine your own immune system and health and do not risk the health of others,” says the WHO in its fact sheet.
