Dwyane Wade recently appeared at the TIME 100 Summit where he spoke out against the increasingly hostile social and legal environment transgender people find themselves occupying, including his 15-year-old trans daughter Zaya.

The future basketball Hall of Famer’s remarks come on the heels of many states implementing anti-trans sports measures, most recently in Louisiana with their Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. Other states that have proposed and passed similar legislation include: Arizona, Iowa, Kentucky, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Eight states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia) saw these law pass last year.Â
