Elon Musk’s appearance on Saturday Night Live caused Dogecoin to experience a steep dip three days after the cryptocurrency reached an all-time high.
On Saturday morning, Dogecoin was trading at around 70 cents. After the Tesla CEO’s hosting appearance, it dropped nearly 40 percent and was trading at around 44 cents by Sunday. Musk mentioned Dogecoin at various points during his SNL appearance. In his opening monologue, joked about disappointing his mother by getting Dogecoin as a Mother’s Day present. He then struggled to explain what the cryptocurrency is before admitting it was just a hustle in the Weekend Update segment. During the skit, Musk gives varying answers when asked with Dogecoin is. When Michael Che finally asked if Dogecoin was a hustle, Musk responded, “Yeah, it’s a hustle.”
Despite its dip over the weekend, Dogecoin has gained 800% this month. According to Coinbase, it’s currently the fifth-largest cryptocurrency in the world, with a market value of nearly $70 billion.
