The controversial 10-day dog meat festival in the southwestern city of Yulin kicked off despite coronavirus and public health risks.
This comes after China imposed a ban in late February on the sale and consumption of wild animals, such as bats and snakes. Shenzhen also became the first city to ban the consumption of dogs. However, dogs have been classified as pets, not livestock, via the agricultural ministry, leading many to question how Yulin’s trade will continue in the future.
