Warner, who passed away at age 54, played the beloved middle child of the Huxtable family—a role that became a cultural touchstone during the show’s successful run from 1984 to 1992. In a recent interview with ABC News’ Linsey Davis, Bill Cosby—who portrayed Malcolm’s on-screen father, Cliff Huxtable—opened up about Warner’s passing and their long-standing bond, both on and off screen.
Cosby shared that the character of Theo was loosely based on his own son, Ennis Cosby, who was tragically murdered in 1997. Reflecting on Warner’s work ethic and demeanor, Cosby described him as “truthful” and someone who knew how to “walk away from a conversation without being rude.”
Although it was suggested during the interview that the two had not spoken recently, Cosby pushed back, insisting that Warner called him regularly. Cosby praised Warner’s professionalism and discipline as an actor, saying, “He would’ve been one of Spencer Tracy’s favorite actors. He never bumped into the furniture. He always knew his lines and always knew where to go.”
