B-Girl Raygun needed therapy after her Olympic breaking disaster transformed one eccentric performance into two years of worldwide ridicule and anxiety.
Raygun, whose legal name is Rachael Gunn, began breaking during her mid-20s after learning from Samuel Free, her future husband and coach. She later earned a doctorate in cultural studies and researched breaking culture while competing across Australia and several World Breaking Championships. Her road to Paris ran through the WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships held in Sydney during October 2023. Raygun defeated fellow Australian B-Girl Molly Chapman, known as Holy Molly, during the final and secured Oceania’s automatic Olympic qualification position. The Australian academic already consulted a therapist before Paris because she feared her unconventional style could make her an international laughingstock.
Nine international judges selected by the World DanceSport Federation evaluated that tournament, according to the Australian Olympic Committee. Free was neither a judge nor a member of the independent selection panel, despite conspiracy theories alleging he engineered his wife’s victory.
