In his State of the City address, Mayor Eric Adams declared that New York City has taken a groundbreaking step by designating social media as an environmental toxin or a “public health hazard.”
He emphasized that particular social media companies are exacerbating a mental health crisis, particularly among the youth. To address this concern, Dr. Ashwin Vasan, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner, has issued an advisory classifying the unrestricted access to and utilization of social media as a public health hazard.
