Batman Ninjastars plenty of traditional Batman characters, including the Joker, Harley Quinn and Robin. When they’re accidentally transported to Japan in the Middle Ages, Batman must figure out a way to stop the Joker and his minions from forever altering the future of the country.

Warner Bros. Japan and Warner Bros. Entertainment first announced the feature-length anime in October, a few days before New York Comic Con began. The film is being directed by Jumpei Mizusaki, best known for his producing duties on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and his technical animation work on an assortment of Mega Man games, including Mega Man X7 and Mega Man X8. The real hero behind Batman Ninja, however, is Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki. Okazaki is a character designer for the anime, and led the stunning redesign behind one of of DC Comics’ most popular characters.

Harely Quinn, Catwoman, Joker and even Alfred all receive similar redesign treatments that give each of their characters a fresh look we haven’t seen before. It’s a little jarring at first, but there’s no doubt each of these characters and their collection of costumes are downright stunning.

Batman Ninja will be released in Japan in 2018.
