In July 2020, a dispute between hip-hop artists Tory Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion escalated after a party in Los Angeles, leading to Lanez firing at Stallion and causing injuries to her feet.

Stallion underwent surgery, and Lanez was charged with felony assault. He was later found guilty of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possessing an unregistered firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Lanez, now sentenced to 10 years in prison, is seeking help from the legal organization Unite The People, where he previously served as a board member. Lanez had donated $50,000 to the organization in 2021 to support families dealing with legal challenges, citing his own experiences with the legal system.
