In a recent interview with rapper Maino, DJ Vlad shared how he transitioned from a mixtape DJ to a pioneering content creator on YouTube.
Vlad began as a full-time DJ in 2000, relocating from the Bay Area to New York to advance his mixtape career. After gaining global recognition and touring internationally, he realized the limitations of mixtape culture as physical sales declined and legal challenges arose.
Seeing a future in video, Vlad shifted to producing hip-hop DVDs and documentaries around 2006-2007. When YouTube emerged, he quickly adapted by uploading his content online, recognizing the platform’s unique ability to distribute videos widely and monetize through embedded views on media outlets like TMZ. This strategic move not only extended his reach beyond his own following but also established him as an early innovator who helped shape the modern hip-hop media landscape.
