Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performed their hit song “Empire State of Mind” at the 2009 MTV VMAs, the ending of their performance was interrupted by Lil Mama, who seemingly walked on-stage to pose with the two artists because she was feeling the moment.
In an interview with ‘Drink Champs,’ Keys spoke about the moment, saying, “Somehow, however [Lil Mama] got over here, I didn’t even bear witness to. The whole show, I was ice…so focused on making it amazing. I went backstage, and Jay was like, ‘So, you ain’t see that?’ And I was like, ‘What?’ He was like, ‘Nah, you ain’t just see what just happened?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we killed it. That’s what just happened.’” Since then, footage of Keys and Lil Mama surfaced, with the two hugging one another while Teyana Taylor and others watched.
