On March 5, 2006, the Memphis rap group won Best Original Song for “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from Hustle & Flow, becoming the first Hip-Hop group ever to take home an Academy Award.
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! hosted by Nashville native Jelly Roll, Juicy J and Project Pat reflected on a letter Parton sent the group after beating her at the 2006 Oscars. Dolly and Three 6 were both up for Best Original Song; the former for “Travelin’ Thru” from Transamerica and the latter for “It’s Hard Out Here For A Pimp” from Hustle & Flow. The Memphis legends became the first hip-hop group to win an Academy Award (and to perform at the event). The country icon cheered for them in the award ceremony’s crowd. Then, the country artist asked the rap duo if they ever heard from Dolly afterwards. That’s when Juicy shared the story of how Parton congratulated them via a sweet personal letter.
Juicy J also revealed he was able to meet Dolly before Three 6 went onstage. The music world is in mourning right now, but stories like these help lighten the way… Much like Dolly Parton helped so many on their paths.
