Basketball Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich will no longer be the head coach of the Spurs and is transitioning into the role as president of basketball operations.
Popovich, who began coaching the Spurs in 1996, will transition into a full-time role as the team’s president of basketball operations, according to sources from ESPN. The move follows a health scare in November, when Popovich suffered a stroke. During his recovery, assistant coach Mitch Johnson assumed head coaching responsibilities. On Friday (May 2), the Spurs officially named Johnson as the new head coach.
