For over three decades, Goodie Mob has been telling Atlanta’s story from the ground up and now, T-Mo, Khujo, Big Gipp, and CeeLo Green are taking that mission from wax to screen as executive producers on “Thomasville,” a short film about the Southeast Atlanta housing project that no longer exists.
“Thomasville” is the work of Atlanta native director and writer Alex Woodruff, who built the project as a personal tribute to the neighborhood he grew up around. The film stars Jay Jones (“P-Valley”) and Stephen Ruffin (“Snowfall”) in a story that unfolds inside a rain-soaked car parked outside an Atlanta hospital. A young man sits with his ailing father, and the two wrestle with a fractured relationship shaped by the streets of Thomasville Heights.
The neighborhood itself tells a political story. Thomasville Heights was one of several Atlanta public housing communities demolished as the city pursued redevelopment and gentrification. The film confronts that history directly, exploring the infamous Red Dog police unit’s aggressive tactics in the projects, the displacement that followed demolition, and the generational trauma residents still carry.
