The Federal government has launched a criminal investigation into Facebook’s parent company, Meta, for its alleged role in the illicit sale of drugs on its platforms.
According to a Federal grand jury subpoena reviewed by ABC News, prosecutors are concerned that social media companies like Meta are not doing enough to prevent the sale and marketing of illegal drugs. The Justice Department has requested all records showing any drug content on Meta’s platforms that may have violated federal law, specifically focusing on the illicit sale of drugs. Authorities are worried about the growing trend of victims being sold illicit drugs through contacts on social media, as well as the unethical promotion of opioid use through online advertising.
