Drake is stepping into the director’s chair with a visual project that’s got everyone wondering what he’s really building.

The Toronto superstar released a trailer for his mysterious “FOMO” film on Saturday morning, and it’s nothing like the typical music video rollout fans are used to seeing from him. He’s calling it a not-so-short film directed and scored “by the family,” which signals something more ambitious than a three-minute visual companion to a single. Drake’s floating on a bright green yacht while a woman’s voice cuts through the water, asking philosophical questions about life’s biggest regrets. It’s introspective, almost cinematic in its storytelling, and a far cry from the typical Hip-Hop visual aesthetic. This move makes complete sense given Drake’s track record in television and film production.

He’s been an executive producer on HBO’s “Euphoria” since 2019, helping shape one of television’s most critically acclaimed shows. He also bought the rights to the British series “Top Boy” and pitched it to Netflix, which greenlit the revival with him serving as executive producer. Drake’s early acting career actually funded his music ambitions. The money he made on “Degrassi” helped him record his first projects, which eventually led to founding OVO Sound with producer 40.

“FOMO” is set to premiere on YouTube on September 15 at 9 PM EST, giving fans just three days to speculate about what’s coming.
