The official trailer for Mortal Kombat II finally focuses on the actual tournament and introducing fan-favorite Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban which seems to signify a new beginning for the franchise.

The film is directed by Simon McQuoid and features an expanded ‘player select screen’ including Shao Kahn, Kitana, and Jade among others added to the roster. The trailer hints at the return of characters thought dead, including Sub-Zero (potentially as Noob Saibot) and Kung Lao, so in typical Mortal Kombat fashion, death does not necessarily spell the end for these characters.

At first look, Shao Kahn, played by Martyn Ford reveals that the emperor is depicted as an imposing warlord, but may still be in the infancy of his power. Ford’s impressive stature is arguably the most intimidating audiences have seen on screen when it comes to live action adaptations of the character. Kitana and Jade (played by Adeline Rudolph (Kitana) and Tati Gabrielle (Jade) show up and are appropriately mysterious. Nothing is really known about them at this point, other than the fact they are introduced as lethal warriors from Outworld.

The trailer is quite a tonal shift from the first film, as the gritty origin story has changed to high-stakes summer spectacle. While the 2021 film was noted for its somewhat “grim” and slow-paced setup, the second trailer for the sequel indicates a more confident, larger-scale approach. Much of the trailer’s tonal pivot is anchored by Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage. His character introduces a “self-deprecating” humor and cocky arrogance that leans into the sillier, fun trappings of the original video games.
