At the recent GQ Men of the Year Awards, rapper Young Thug humorously referred to himself as a “gay rapper” in a red carpet interview when asked about his “gay anthem of the moment”.

During an interview with Them magazine on the red carpet, Young Thug was asked to name his current “gay anthem”. After asking for clarification, he smiled and answered: “Maybe ‘Ninjas.’ It’s called ‘Ninjas,’ and it’s by this gay rapper named Young Thug”. The comment was a joke, likely referencing past rumors about his sexuality that stemmed from his gender-fluid fashion choices, such as wearing a dress on the cover of his 2016 mixtape JEFFERY. In other contexts, he has explicitly stated he is straight. His remark was widely reported in entertainment news as a playful response to the question and the ongoing speculation about his public persona.

Young Thug has a history of wearing gender-nonconforming clothing, most notably a dress on the cover of his 2016 mixtape Jeffery, which has often led to speculation and rumors about his sexuality. He has typically shut down these rumors, asserting that he is straight, but at this recent event he decided to engage in some playful banter on the subject.
