According to Deadline, a fifth season of the series was in talks in March, with sources saying Starz was “pleased with Season 4 creatively” and was “looking forward to sharing new action-packed episodes with fans.” However, the show reportedly faced behind-the-scenes tension, particularly the strained relationship between Fifty and the real-life Big Meech following his release from prison. This feud, which worsened when Big Meech linked up with Rick Ross, Fifty’s longtime rival, allegedly caused anxiety on set during the third and fourth seasons. However, sources told Deadline it was not the reason for the cancellation.
Deadline reports that the likely reason for the show’s end is Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch’s strategy to manage content costs by developing more new series rather than sustaining existing ones as they become more expensive. The network has been wrapping other long-running shows, including the Power franchise, while planning new projects including Power: Origins and Power: Legacy. Fif had previously confirmed plans to expand BMF into a larger universe called BMF Immortal. Although no BMF spinoffs have been announced, the rapper will continue collaborating with Starz on the Power franchise and the British boxing drama Fightland.
