The Canadian hip-hop community and entertainment industry are mourning the loss of Bishop Brigante, a rapper and actor who passed away on March 30, 2025, after battling colorectal cancer.
Born in Toronto, Bishop Brigante initially pursued a music career, gaining recognition as one of Canada’s best rap performers. His energetic performances and award-winning music videos made him a household name in the hip-hop scene. Bishop made history as the first Canadian to win three consecutive weeks on BET’s Freestyle Friday. In 2008, Brigante signed a record deal with Bodog Music, releasing the hit single “It’s Fo Twenty” featuring Nate Dogg. His contributions to music and television extended into hosting, as he led AUX TV’s Ultimate MC, a show dedicated to finding Canada’s best battle rapper.
His career took a turn toward acting when director Joe Carnahan cast him in the 2002 film Narc, starring Ray Liotta and Jason Patric, where he played Eugene “Deacon” Sheps. This led to further acting opportunities, including roles in Platinum, A Clockwork Orange (stage production), and Orphan Black.
Brigante was diagnosed with colon cancer in October 2023, but his health struggles began two years earlier when he started experiencing severe stomach pain, diarrhea, and blood in his stool. Despite these challenges, he remained resilient and hopeful, supported by family, friends, and fans. A GoFundMe page was created to assist with Brigante’s medical expenses, as he sought treatments outside of Canada. His family expressed their gratitude for the support he received, acknowledging the impact of community donations and messages of encouragement.
Bishop was a passionate advocate for cancer awareness, openly sharing his journey to educate others on early detection. The news of Brigante’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans, artists, and industry professionals. He will be remembered for his passion, resilience, and contributions to Canadian hip-hop and entertainment. His influence will live on through his music, films, and the many lives he touched. His son has issued a heartfelt statement on IG honouring his father’s legacy:
