DJ Mustard spoke to the Recording Academy ahead of the Grammy Awards, and he opened up about the recording process behind Kendrick Lamar’s GNX, including “Hey Now.”
Kendrick received five nominations for “Not Like Us” and another two for “Like That,” his collab with Metro Boomin and Future. While speaking about working with Kendrick, DJ Mustard told the Academy:
âI had heard âHey Nowâ during the âNot Like Usâ video shoot; he played me a snippet,â he told Grammy.com. âI asked him, âMan, what made you do that?â And he said, âWhen I heard the beat, I just felt like Goku or something.â I was like, âWhat?â And he explained, âYeah, when I hear certain shit on your beats, it brings out something else in me, so I just did whatever I felt.â I was like, âWow, thatâs crazy.’â
Mustard initially made the beat in 2019 and as he told People earlier this month, he actually offered it to multiple rappers before Kendrick â but each person turned it down for one reason or another.
