In the early 2000s, an animated series called The Proud Family premiered on the Disney Channel. The comedy’s main protagonist, Penny Proud, was voiced by actress Kyla Pratt.

While the role of Penny’s dad, Oscar, was voiced by the former co-star of In Living Color, Tommy Davidson. The 2D cartoon lasted four seasons before being discontinued in 2005. Nearly two decades after The Proud Family’s inaugural episode on the Disney channel, the show was rebooted on Disney+. The Proud Family: Lounder and Prouder debuted in 2022, just before an announcement by Karey Burke (the president of Disney’s General Entertainment Content) that the company’s television and film productions would become much more forthright in their efforts to include characters/actors from an array of ethnic cultures and the LGBTQ+ community. With that being said, Bruce. W. Smith, the creator/producer of The Proud Family: Lounder and Prouder recently came under fire upon the release of an episode that featured a scene where the children gave a spoken word poetry performance in front of their school about slavery, racism, reparations, prison reform, and White guilt.
