Recently, a scientist at the University of Cyprus named Leondios Kostrikis claimed to local media that he and his team discovered a new COVID-19 variant.
The scientist went on to say the variant has “omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes.” This means both variants are present in this new variant. According to Kostrikis, only 25 cases have been identified within people, with most of the cases stemming from people who were hospitalized for the virus. The scientist and professor then gave his take on the newer strains, saying, “We will see in the future if this strain is more pathological or more contagious or if it will prevail.” As of now, the United States has a seven-day average of over 600,000 new COVID cases daily.
