Jordan Peele admitted he thanks the green that helped him win gold for Get Out.
The movie’s Film Independent Spirit Award Best Director win came as another proud moment for the Oscar-winning screenplay writer. While directors acknowledge inspiration for their award-winning projects coming from various places, Peele was very candid about the thought process for creating the film during his acceptance speech.
The comedian explained that the movie wasn’t even created to stand as a statement about society.
“I sat down, and I would smoke a little bit of weed while I try to write a mind-bending horror film. At some point, I just followed the truth and realized there are people that are locked up for smoking less weed than I smoked while I wrote the movie.”
As humorous as his admission was, it wasn’t hard to believe. The actor got his start on MadTV, where he played weed-based characters in several different spoofs. He kept the creative juices flowing as a writer and co-star on Key & Peele alongside Keegan-Michael Key. Not to mention, the character he developed for their collaborative movie, Keanu, was nothing more than Key’s weed smoking cousin. No matter how Jordan Peele decides to get the ball rolling to produce movie magic, there’s no doubt that it’s working for him. Clearly, no one can put out his fire because he’s smokin’! (Pun in intended)
