In Los Angeles and the surrounding cities, murals are an integral part of the culture.
The brilliantly crafted images often tell the stories of Black and Brown communities by paying homage to some of the region’s most legendary homegrown figures, such as Nipsey Hustle and Oscar De La Hoya, along with sentimental Angelenos like Gigi Bryant. The paintings also honor deceased icons who weren’t born and raised in the area but endeared themselves to the community, like 2Pac.
The city of Bellflower, located 17.6 miles outside of downtown Los Angeles, recently served an artist known as @sloe_motions (on Instagram) with a notice to remove a seminal mural that he created on the side of Speedy Auto Tint on Woodruff Avenue that features images of Kobe Bryant, Snoop Dogg, Vin Scully, Oscar De La Hoya, and Danny Trejo. The action has prompted a swift response from people all over Los Angeles County and a few celebrities on the wall, such as Oscar De La Hoya and Danny Trejo, who both reached out to @sloe_motion via social media upon the announcement.
