The two music industry giants decided to meet with the NBA champion Golden State Warriors on Tuesday at practice for a discussion on business. Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine stopped by the Warriors practice facility at the behest of the team’s director of player programs, Jonnie West.
Needless to say, the players were pumped at the opportunity to speak with two men who helped shape the music industry as we know it today. “Dre has impacted music in general,” said Warriors forward Draymond Green. “In the black community in general. To go from music to one of the biggest CEOs we’ve seen, showing kids that hope, giving kids that hope coming from Compton. It just showing that there are ways out.”
The annual business meeting that is sanctioned by the league usually focuses on the salary cap but the Warriors front office felt that this opportunity would be more impactful for their players. Especially after news recently broke regarding Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine possibly sitting on $700 million in Apple stock, there’s probably a few things the two music moguls could impart to the players about making it big in Silicon Valley.
ESPN writer Chris Haynes who was present for the visit took the opportunity to ask Dr. Dre a more pressing question. Is Detox ever coming out or is permanently on the shelf? Well, according to the Haynes, Dre said that “I’m working on a couple songs right now. We’ll see.”
For hip-hop fanatics, the elusive Detox album has become more of a myth as the years go by. The album was slated to be released after Dre dropped The Chronic 2001 but since then the legendary producer and mogul have continuously pushed back the project to the point that fans no longer believe it will ever be released. Dr. Dre’s most recent release was Compton which was a de-facto soundtrack for the Straight Outta Compton biopic but that didn’t seem to suffice for the fans.
